“I think AGR is an awesome organization. I have come to realize (my daughter and I volunteered at the dog wash) how beautiful greyhounds really are. I work a FT and a PT job but still try to find time to volunteer with some events. Thanks” - - Carol W.
Fostering – Greyhound socialization is a key component to successful adoption. Fostering is especially beneficial if your situation doesn’t allow for adoption of an animal at this time in your life. Fostering is one of the greatest gifts you can give to a greyhound. By getting a greyhound out of the kennel, you could be saving the life of a hound coming off the track with nowhere else to go. Volunteer Director or Coordinator AGR seeks a volunteer director (board position) or reliable volunteer coordinator who is a people person to oversee volunteers. The duties include updating new volunteers to an Excel database. Oversees another volunteer coordinator who calls and introduces new volunteers to AGR opportunities. Places volunteers with the appropriate directors or coordinators to ensure that volunteers are finding their niche within AGR. Schedules volunteers for various events. For a board position, the director would plan the volunteer appreciation party and chair or co-chair an event or two per year plus attend monthly board meetings.
Adoption Coordinator – You would join the ranks of the dedicated existing adoption coordinators. We are specifically looking for ACs in Midtown and Green Valley/Sahuarita. When a new online application comes in for your area, you would be the initial point of contact with the potential adopter, arrange for a home inspection, let the potential adopter know the availability of suitable dogs and where to meet them, and arrange for the actual adoption. It’s a great way to get to know new adopters and dogs. Read how Cheryl Bennett enjoys her duties as adoption coordinator.
Meet-and-Greet Tabling Put your best face forward and volunteer to table for 2 hours once a month or more on the weekends at PetsMart, PETCO, Bookmans or other venues. Tabling is often the first step to piquing potential interest in an adoptable greyhound. New volunteers will be paired with an existing team so you can learn the ropes.
Transporting – Perhaps you’d rather get behind the wheel instead of meeting people face to face. Transporting hounds to and from weekend tabling events takes a few hours a week as does squiring hounds to and from vet appointments. Critical: We need people willing to spend a few hours on the weekend transporting kennel dogs to meet and greet venues especially from the kennel to the eastside and back. During those two hours you could go shopping, visit a friend, go for walk, or drink a latte and go wireless, or hang out at the meet-and-greet. We also need people to transport the hounds to and from their spay and neuter surgeries. This is weekday mornings and evenings from the Marana Kennel to a NW veterinary clinic.
Kenneling – Help out at the Marana kennel whether you have a set schedule or not. We need people who have a flexible schedule to show dogs to prospective adopters at the kennel, bathe/intake, trim nails. Kennel volunteers can sign up online to do turn out such as pick up pet waste, clean kennels, and interact with hounds who are experiencing 1-to-1 pet to people joy for the first time. (Short orientation required.)
Grant Writing – A continual flow of grant monies for dog food, medical supplies, spay/neutering, broken bones, micro-chipping, Valley Fever testing, and educating the community is crucial to our coffers and the number of dogs we can rescue. Grant writing can be done from the confines of your own keyboard. You can do this solo or make it a team effort. AGR is looking for seasoned grant writers. For people who want to add grant writing to their resume, you can learn by starting to do development and/or research. Contact the Fundraiser Director with questions.
Outreach – Outreach volunteers are always needed to take the hounds to enlighten service groups, schools, businesses, active adult communities, and other organizations about our mission and the joys of greyhound adoption. If you have contacts to any of the above, please contact the Outreach Director.
Newsletter Editor/Coordinator Wanted: An experienced newsletter editor with good follow through. Previous experience writing or editing non-profit or business newsletters desired. AGR has a goal to put out three newsletters a year which must be a professional document. Work with our volunteer graphic designer, unless you also multi-task. Contact us with experience, samples, and desire.
Mentoring – This is a new program where you can provide new adopters with your good old greyhound expertise. Set your own hours and who knows -- you could make some new friends along the way. Mentors are needed.
Random Volunteering is always needed and appreciated for other events such as: reunions (spring and fall), animal fairs, Santa photos especially men who have always fantasized about wearing the big red suit, summer dog washes, assorted meet-and-greets around town (Rincon Farmers Market), Oro Valley Art Festival, or as substitutes at Petsmart, Petco, and Bookman; doing home inspections for prospective adopters (training provided), make phone calls to other volunteers (volunteer coordinator needed now), write press releases and pitch the media, etc.
