Article: Brothers Bond

Brothers Bond
By BJ DeBruine

In mid January I offered to foster Quint. He was a big boy, a 90-pound, 2-year-old puppy. My male greyhound, 3 ½ year-old Toby, at 87 pounds, was always a giant in my mind. When Quint came into the house and he was taller than Toby. I wondered what I had done. Toby jumped with joy at the sight of Quint.

They looked so similar in bone structure and movement that I guessed they might be related. When I checked Quint’s pedigree, it was true. They are half brothers and have the same father, Craigie Whistler.

After a few hours there was some pretty rough play. They are big dogs, big noise, and big teeth. There was an argument over a chew treat. I wondered if this was going to work.

I decided to set up two crates that were in storage. One is a really big one and one is big but smaller than the first. They have canvas covers with screen windows that can be rolled up.

My nerves were calmed and I had a good laugh soon enough.

I was doing laundry which is located very close to the crates. When I turned around I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was my two big boys squished together, lying side by side in the smaller crate. There couldn’t have been an inch to spare. It wasn’t designed for 180 pounds of dog! They had their paws crossed over each other and looked very content smiling at me. Of course, any chance for a picture was spoiled when they both bounded out to greet me.

Soon afterwards, my two dogs, Skeeter (a rat terrier) and Toby, and I, decided Quint should be a permanent part of our family. We are very fortunate to have him.

BJ has since renamed Quint to Chevy Chase and they are living happily ever after.
